“The Lord is My Shepherd” - Psalms 23:1

The shepherd was a dedicated and consistent person. Being with the sheep would have wrought love in his heart for his flock. I have read that the shepherd would get up each morning and call his flock to him. Each shepherd would have a distinct sound and even if the sheep were intermingled with other flocks, they would only hear their shepherd and follow after him. They never followed the wrong shepherd. He never forces his sheep to follow but leads them in the way he wants them to go. The shepherd would lead his flock into the best feeding, watering and sheltered places he could find. The shepherd would tend to their scratches and bruises they got through out the day. He would carry his rod to beat off the wolves and dangerous animals that would try to attack his sheep. At night he would sleep across the gate to assure their safety.

Hebrews 13:20 “Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep.”  Isn’t this a wonderful picture of our Shepherd? He calls us to be his personal sheep. Isa. 49:1 “I have called thee by name. thou art mine.” He feeds us the best. John 6:34 “And Jesus said unto them. I am the bread of life. he that cometh unto me shall never hunger again...” He leads us to the best water supply. John 4:4 “…but the water that I give him, shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” He has us to lie down in green pastures. Matt 11:28 “Come unto me all ye (sheep) that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” He binds up our hurts. Psalm 147:3 “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.” He guards us from all harm. Psalm 91:11 “For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.”  He doesn’t force us to follow but leads us gently along. John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me.”
